Each year we have the pleasure of joining with the Kiwanis Seniors Lodge to share in some festive merriment. This year was no exception. Old and new faces join in singing - making one realize the cycle of the year.

Watching the interactions between the bright eyed Beavers and the wise seniors is very special indeed. Each gaining a bit of joy from the other. Favorites like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa" and "Jingle Bells" were enjoyed by young and old alike.

All of us from the 25th Edmonton Scouts at Christ Church wish the residents of the Kiwanis Seniors Lodge and their staff a glorious and Merry Christmas. We hope that others got out to share in this companionship at surrounding seniors establishments.

Rip Roaring Start to the Scout Year

Well, we all headed out to lovely Bonnie Lake for a great weekend at our all-section camp. Just about all youth were able to make the camp and the weather was glorious. Our camp coordinator, CM, prepared a great camp schedule and menu. Her organization carried us through the whole weekend. Everyone had their role to play and boy did we play.

Beavers made their own fires (with help) and cooked their wieners as their section activity, while Cubs demonstrated their skill at firesetting and carving. The Scouts took on the new task of setting up a Geocaching course and went a long way to earning themselves a new badge. And after the Venturers explored the coastline, they designed a very enjoyable campfire for all to partake. Each of the sections came prepared and performed for the groups enjoyment. Leaders were ready at hand to assist, coach, direct, manouver and watch. The parents, those who weren't already engaged as leaders, joined in on section activities and amused themselves.

The afternoon brought time for all-section activities and freetime. Canoeing and fishing were popular endeavors and as was relaxing by the fire. The water was silken and the fish were hiding. This did not deter those who wanted to cast a line.

We had time for capture the flag and to play a new game called 'Kubb'. My sense is, it is a mix between boules, chess, and horseshoes. This Swedish game was introduced to the group in the past year by the Venturers. Very fun, and as we found - highly competitive.

Our weekend finished with Scouts Own and reflections upon what we have and what we earn. We are all looking forward to a great scouting year.

Many thanks to all who came, enjoyed, and helped to clean up. I see Halloween in my sights.

Open House & Registration Night - September 7

Welcoming both new and return Scouts of all ages, the 25th Edmonton Scout Group will be hosting an open house and registration night on Wednesday, September 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Christ Church in the Oliver Community.

A great way to introduce family, friends, neighbours and kids from school to Scouting... Leaders will be on hand to answer questions about the program, as well as host interactive activities for the youth. There will be a display about our group, a registration table and refreshments.

Registration fees are $205 per child for the whole year. That's about $5 per meeting! Plus, the 25th Edmonton Scout Group participates in community service, camping and hiking adventures, field trips and more! There is always something awesome going on.

Meeting Tuesday nights:
Beaver Scouts (5-7 yrs)
Cub Scouts (8-10 yrs)

Scouts (11-14 yrs)
Venturer Scouts (14-17 yrs)

22nd World Scouting Jamboree wraps up in Sweden

Two youth from the 25th Edmonton Scout Group's Venturer Company had the time of their lives at the 22nd World Scouting Jamboree!

Oliver and Katherine spent several days at a pre-camp with the Canadian contingent in Frankfurt, Germany before heading to Sweden to WJ. More than 39,000 Scouts from 146 countries gathered to celebrate all things Scouting.

Good times in "Summer" town!

The Jamboree staged massive arena events including a cultural festival, and opening and closing ceremonies where international artists performed, including the hit band, Europe. Scouts held a United Nations simulation, worked their way through the ultimate Quest obstacle course, managed sustainable development in the Earth exercise, journeyed into the Dream night time activity, explored cultures from around the world in the Global Development Village, and much, much more.

The Scottish contingent arrives in style

WJ encouraged solidarity between the Scouts, and promoted the unity between Scout Organisations from around the world. Through games, activities and educational modules, the Scouts learned that we share a common responsibility to our world and to each other. Respect for other people, emphasising equal rights and peace, was a key message.

Scouts interview the King of Sweden

Many VIP guests visited the youth, including three prime ministers, the king and queen of Sweden, and even Bear Grylls with a dramatic entrance at the opening ceremonies.

“We are part of something so special,” said Man vs. Wild’s outdoor guru as he addressed the sea of Scouts at the opening ceremony of the 22^nd World Scouting Jamboree. “We are part of 28 million Scouts around the world. That is a world-wide force for good, encouraging people like you to make a difference.”

25th Venturers go to the 22nd World Jamboree in Sweden

After two years of planning and fundraising, two of the 25th Edmonton's Venturers are off to Sweden... home of Abba! Meatballs! Ikea! Oliver and Katherine will be joined by 39,000 other Scouts from around the globe in this mega-gathering of all things Scouting. Check out the World Jamboree site here.

Leadership Retreat

WoW! Lots of fun was had by all in this 24 hour packed event. A time to get to know other leaders better, but also time to share the group wisdom. We managed to get some basic work done on next years programs, eat well, and even have some time for some friendly competition. A Geocaching activity which involved all members certainly ended the retreat off with a gasp!

End of Year Activities

Are you curious like this little fellow? This little 2 week old bunny is ready to stretch out and experience his world and we hope that the little Beavers in the group have been enjoying doing just that this spring. The Beavers got to enjoy the companionship of a family of new baby bunnies as well as get their hands mucky in the dirt planting flowers. Coin collections have been flourishing as little fingers look for dates and sort the pennies.

Our Wolf Cubs have been learning to shoot an arrow straight and true, while still taking time to play games, build bat houses, and link with the Beavers.

For the Scouts, it has been a learning time - a time of change. We lost our leaders this year and so the scouts have had to adjust and get used to new expectations. They have lost some dear friends, but also gained some new ones. The have completed their 18 wheelers, so machinery has been shelved; they enjoyed and flourished at the Fort Edmonton camp.

Now the MedVents have managed to participate in several camps offering their medical expertise. Helping with dehydration issues, small wounds, and home sickness as they have been needed.

But before we head into the new year, we are looking forward to our Leadership Retreat, our Year End BBQ and celebration of the youth and leaders.

Spring and Pre-Registration

Well hasn't the year flown by? So much has happened with the group. We have seen new members and new leaders come on board. We have said goodbye to some friends and wish them luck.
Between bottle drives, popcorn sales, and casinos we have gathered together at the all section family camp, Remembrance day ceremony and the Baden Powell event. Youth have worked on badges, our MedVents have run an amazing "Survivor Camp" for other troops and our youth have had a lot of fun.
This past Christmas we sang carols for the Kiwanis centre and were well received by those in attendance. Very exciting for us this year is the re institution of the Rover section. If you are interested in Rovers....they are looking for young adults (18-26).
We are looking for a new Beaver leader and an assistant Cub leader for next year, so if you might be interested, please contact us soon. We would also like to find a person willing to take over as Registrar. Don't hesitate to contact the group commissioner if you are interested.
We are also always looking to encourage more youth to join at all section levels.

So come out and join up.

Scout Popcorn kick-off next week!

Scout Popcorn ~ our biggest fundraiser of the year is about to kick-off with information packages being distributed next week. Here is a brief overview of the campaign.

Important dates
Our sale will begin on Tuesday, September 28 and end on Wednesday, October 27
Money turn in date is October 26 for Beavers/Cubs & October 27 for Scouts/Venturers

We will have a popcorn kickoff for the Beavers & Cubs during their regular meetings on September 28, and for the Scouts & Venturers on September 29 during their regular meetings. Parents are welcome! Full info packages will be distributed at this time.

Popcorn pick-up date for deliveries will be early December at Christ Church. Final date to be confirmed from Northern Lights Council.

Goals
We challenge each family to reach a goal of $600 in Scout Popcorn sales to help the group achieve its plans for the year and continue to provide a great program.

We plan to use the money we raise to do the following things:
1. Camping trips for all sections
2. New equipment as needed!
3. Council, provincial, national &/or international camps/Jamborees
Families can even use money raised to pay for their fees next fall.

Sell $600 of popcorn? Each seller gets a crest for selling just one item; a choice of gift cards or prizes at the $250 and $350 sales marks; a $20 Walmart or Future Shop card at the $450 mark; and for selling $600, you’re in the “600 Club” with a special crest and the coveted marshmallow crossbow! Keep selling and the prizes get bigger, including a start-up college fund for those who reach $2,500 in sales… more to come on in the info packs next week!

Registration time is here. Time to belly up and fill in the forms and pay for your scouting experience. We will meet on Wednesday Sept 8th, 2010 at the church to complete registrations for those who did not get pre-registered. Please remember to bring your payment, as well as this year's "Fundraising committment" cheques. (These are post-dated cheques for the end of Dec and the end of June in the amount of $100 - to be cashed only if you do not participate in four out of five fundraising events).

We would like to welcome all youth and parents/guardians to the 25th Edmonton Scouts, located in the beautiful Christ Church facility. This amazing group of dynamic, excited youth from around Edmonton meet Tuesday and Wednesday nights enjoying the Scout Canada programming. Scout leaders bring exciting programming to the youth, including a vast range of activities.
Youth can experience growth in leadership skills through involvement in community activities, extreme adventures, camping, archery, pellitry, and much more.
